Anecdotes about Pamiers
Did you know how Pamiers got its name? On his return from the first crusade, Roger-Bernard II, Count of Foix, named the castle and its dependents ‘Castrum Appamiae’. This was in reference to Apamée, the area of Syria in which he fought his battles. Pamiers locals are known as Appaméens.
In 1207, the Colloque de Pamiers marked the final encounter between the Cathars and the Catholic church.
Another fun fact for you: Pamiers is the birthplace of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). The city pays tribute to the famous musician and composer every year with the Musiques au Pays de Gabriel Fauré festival.
