TRAVEL GUIDE
What to do in Kiel?
Two-day trip to Kiel
A week-long visit to Kiel
Vacation with the children
Whether your weekend is dedicated to business or pleasure, savor a stroll in the streets of Kiel. This little-known destination is worth a closer look. It has some important sites, such as Saint-Nicolas Church from the 13th century. All dressed in red, the city hall draws the eye with its 222-ft high tower. Climb to the top to enjoy a breathtaking view of Kiel. Before returning to your hotel room, why not be tempted by a walk on the Kiellinie, a nicely landscaped seafront.
A stop for a week in Kiel is a great opportunity to discover the city at its pace. You can then round off your tour of the major monuments with an outing to the maritime museum, the city museum, and the Musée Varleberger Hof. Each one tells you the story of the city in its own way. Do you prefer to get some fresh air not far from our hotels? Opt for a walk around the port, on the seafront, and along the Kiel canal. If you wish to extend your exploration of Germany, our hotels also welcome you to Kassel and Berlin.
After a restful night in your inexpensive hotel room, it’s time to explore Kiel. The city abounds with family activities. A trip to the maritime museum should be included in your itinerary. Established in a former fish market, it delights its visitors with its countless models. The aquarium and the zoological museum are also exciting stops for the kids. Need to stretch your legs? Suggest to the kids an excursion to the botanical garden of Kiel, one of the oldest in Germany.

Zoom in on the culinary specialities
Let your taste buds travel by tasting the gourmet specialties of Kiel. Start your gourmet day with a hearty all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at your hotel. As it is everywhere in Germany, the Wurst, a sausage, is an essential. It is served with potatoes or cabbage. On the seaside, Kiel also benefits from fresh seafood products. Eel and herring are especially popular. Those with a sweet tooth won’t be able to resist the almond paste and the Friesentorte. This tart, flavored with plum jam, is made with puff pastry and pie crust.

The top events
During your stay at our hotels, discover the events that are the heartbeat of Kiel’s festive life. June is certainly the most vibrant month. Entrepreneurs should make for the Waterkant Festival to build their network around conferences and moments of relaxation. The end of June is marked by Kiel Woche, a boat race. Competitions, concerts, encounters, and more, are offered to the public. In August, attend the Internationale Meeresfilmfestival. Films and conferences highlight the marine sciences. Note that the Kiel Opera House and the Sparkassen-Arena host a multitude of events the whole year.

Did you know?
There was a time when Kiel was one of the pied-à-terres of the dukes of Gottorp, from the House of Holstein-Gottorp. As proof, a castle was built in the city, close to our Première Classe hotels. Unfortunately, it was bombed during World War II and suffered immense damage. The ruins have made room for a building with a very contemporary look. The only survivor of the demolition was a wing made of brick and with a tiled roof. It’s up to you to imagine how the castle’s architecture looked before the battle.
