Anecdote about Niort
A thriving city in the early 19th century, Niort owes its reputation to the chamois leather industry. These workers were the ones who supplied Napoleon Bonaparte’s cavalry with their “culottes de peau”, a kind of pant. Niort was also where Napoleon Bonaparte spent one of his last nights in France on July 2, 1815. He was exiled to the island of Saint Helena soon after. Check out the heritage of the surrounding area by staying for longer — you’ll find our affordable Première Classe hotels in La Rochelle and Poitiers, too.
