A historical anecdote about Guéret
Guéret is home to Madeleine Chapelle, the wife of the famous painter Ingres. Ingres originally fell in love with d’Adèle de Lauréal, but she was already married. She put him in touch with her cousin, Madeleine Chapelle, who looked just like her and was a hat-seller in Guéret. After exchanging a few letters, he asked her to marry him. She left her little French village for Rome in September 1814 and married him in the December. She appeared in many of the artist’s paintings, especially The Turkish Bath, which is now on display in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
