Around seven miles to the south of Laon, the Lac d’Aillete Centre Parcs resort is the perfect place for a fun family day out. The department of Aisne is also castle territory, so why not take a trip to the Château de Coucy, a majestic fortress high on the headland above where the Oise and the Ailette rivers meet.

An interesting fact about Laon
Jean-Paul Sartre spent a year teaching at the Lycée de Laon from 1936 to 1937. The philosophy teacher, who graduated as a university professor in 1929, is said to have taken classes outside, with no notes and no tie (which was a bit of a shock at the time). He started writing and publishing papers on philosophy while in Laon, but had yet to make a name for himself. Sartre spoke of Laon in many of his letters to Simone de Beauvoir. He also described the medieval city’s ramparts in the first volume of The Roads to Freedom. Discover all the city’s secrets for yourself with a stay in its Première Classe hotel.
