Leisure activities for the whole family in Mâcon
A relatively small city, Mâcon is the perfect bite-size destination for a weekend family getaway or short work trip. Check out its beautiful city center, with coloured building that spirit you away to the south. In Mâcon’s old town neighborhood of Saint-Antoine, gaze up at the Cathédrale Vieux-Saint-Vincent and the amazing Wooden House, surely one of the oldest buildings in the city. After a peaceful night’s sleep in your Première Classe hotel and an energy-packed breakfast, why not treat yourself to a walk along the banks of the Saône and across the Saint-Laurent Bridge.
If you’re in Mâcon for a long business trip or family stay, make the most of your time here to explore even more of the city and its surroundings. Head to the Musée des Ursulines to admire collections of archaeological finds, ethnography and fine arts from around the region in a former convent, as well as a collection dedicated to Lamartine. The poet once owned the Château de Saint-Point, only half an hour away from your hotel and also open to visitors. Finally, the Mâconnais region is brimming with villages to explore: Brancion, Milly-Lamartine and Blanot are among them, where medieval architecture, hills and vineyards add to the charm of the surrounding landscape.
Enjoying a family vacation to Mâcon? You’ll be happy to hear that there are plenty of walks and fun things to do with the kids there, thanks to its lush green surroundings. The Voie Verte is a great way to explore the idyllic countryside and must-see historical sites of the Saône-et-Loire by bike, on a dedicated cycle path. There’s also the Parc des Oiseaux — the largest bird park in France — just 25 miles away in Villars-les-Dombes, which is home to thousands of amazing birds from all over the world. Are you already thinking about coming back to Bourgogne-Franche-Comté for your next escape? You’ll also find affordable Première Classe hotels in Auxerre, Besançon and Nevers, and that’s not all...

A gastronomic stay in Mâcon
Its rich local land means that foodies are guaranteed a delicious, gourmet experience during their stay in Mâcon. Wine lovers will be kept busy discovering the region’s crus along the Route des Vins Mâconnais-Beaujolais. But there’s more to the area than just wine. In the local restaurants you’ll find culinary specialties like andouillette mâconnaise, Burgundy snails and Bresse chicken, as well as a wide selection of goat’s cheeses. When it comes to dessert, why not treat yourself to an idéal mâconnais: a cake made of meringue, buttercream and special Mâconnaise wafers.

Mâcon's must-see festivities
A summertime stay in Mâcon’s Première Classe hotel is the perfect time to see the city bursting with life. Été Frappé sees a succession of gigs, shows, and sporting events organized in the city every year, with something for everyone on offer. A particular highlight is the Crescent Jazz Club, a festival that has launched the careers of several famous jazz artists. In November, the Les Vendanges de l’Humour festival puts a smile on the city’s face with a series of one-man shows. To continue exploring Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and the host of festivities on offer, check out our affordable Première Classe hotels in Beaune, Auxerre and Chalon-sur-Saône.

Did you know?
Lamartine is not the only poet born in Mâcon. Antoine Bauderon de Sénecé and Jean-Claude Villain are countrymen of his too, albeit less well-known. Although Bauderon de Sénecé lived 93 years and saw both the 17th and 18th centuries, it was only in the second half of his life that he set to work publishing his poetry. Villain, meanwhile, is a modern poet. He was born in Mâcon in 1947, although has since moved away from the area.
